My Round the World Adventure

My Round the World Adventure

The Joy of Traveling as a Couple

Posted: 30 Mar 2011 03:58 AM PDT

Editor’s Note: This is the start of a series of posts by Ant and Elise, a couple that has been traveling together for over a year, on the ups and downs of traveling as a couple. They will be writing a monthly column on traveling as two since I want to be able to provide some advice for couples traveling and I tend to travel mostly alone.

Traveling as a couple is unlike anything else. You’re not alone nor are you just traveling with some friends. It is more than that. You are traveling together as a unit, and as such you get to share all your experiences (the ups and the downs) with someone else. It's about seeing places and sights for the first time and knowing you have done it together. It's about creating memories that you can look back on for years to come knowing you shared them with each other.

Elise and I have been together for five years, engaged for one year and we have been traveling as a couple since the beginning of 2010. We decided to travel long term because we wanted to explore the world, rather than working our fingers to the bone. We saved hard for three years, quit our jobs, sold our things, and never looked back.

Was it the right decision? We think so. Deciding to travel together was one of the easiest choices we ever made. People told us that traveling as a couple will either 'make or break' our relationship and, in all honesty, I can see how that may be the case. You are with the other person 24/7 and you really do get to know them on a deeper level. There is no hiding who you really are. It can be tough for some people, but, while there have been trying times, it has only made us stronger.

The biggest thing that makes couples travel work is compromise. Although Elise and I have similar interests, there are still many times we give and take with one another. Not only does compromising allow your partner to experience something that they really want to do, it also opens your own eyes to another side of travel that you might not have experienced on your own. That is what couples travel is all about. It's about doing things with and for your partner.

It is inevitable, however, that you are bound to fight at one stage or another. The times that Elise and I have had disagreements are usually over matters that don't need addressing. We've discovered that the underlying factor to most of our arguments is that one of us just needs some 'me' time. There's nothing wrong with wanting to have some time on your own. Doing your own thing for a while really helps you  appreciate the other person and it also helps you to see things from their perspective. Just spending a few hours on your own sometimes can make all the difference even if you haven't been fighting with your partner. The best solution to an argument is to talk with each other truthfully and listen to what your partner has to say. You have time to come to a resolution and there is no need to blow anything out of proportion. Nipping the issue in the bud, before things get out of hand is always the best way to try and solve problems. Communication is the key to any successful relationship.

On the other hand, the support that comes from couples travel is greatly rewarding. When you are sick or tired, your partner is there to pull you out of the rut, cheer you up and get you back on your feet. Your partner will be there when you need someone to talk to and when you want to share your deepest fears and sorrows. You get to see each other in a new light and learn more about each other than you ever would when you are back at home. You are that little piece of home to each other that is so good to have around.

Traveling together enhances the quality of time you get to spend with your loved one. Because you are with someone 24/7 there is always the opportunity to be able to have a laugh, have a chat and play together. You are really able to appreciate the small moments together. Waiting for a bus for 12 hours can end up feeling like 5 minutes.

Whatever way you look at it, traveling as a couple is a unique experience. It bonds you and brings you together; it is something special that you both share that will truly last a lifetime.

Anthony is one half of the dynamic duo at Positive World Travel. Both he and Elise will be writing about their experiences and thoughts on what long-term travel is like as a couple. You can also follow them on Facebook for more of their travel updates.

AirAsia not planning fuel surcharges, airfares to remain at current level

AirAsia not planning fuel surcharges, airfares to remain at current level

By ZAZALI MUSA zaza@thestar.com.my

SINGAPORE: AirAsia has no intention to introduce fuel surcharges at the moment despite the hike in crude oil prices following the political uprising in the Middle East .

Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said the airline would continue to keep its airfares at the levels where there were now.

"We are comfortable with our pricings and don't see any needs to impose fuel surcharges,'' he told a media briefing yesterday.

Fernandes said the airline would continue to explore other avenues, including ancillary businesses such as selling hotel rooms, car rental services and tour packages, to make its operations profitable.

Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes and Barry Diller at the partnership launch

He said this after the launch of a partnership between AirAsia and Expedia Inc, the world's largest online travel company. At the ceremony, Expedia was represented by its chairman and senior executive Barry Diller.

A 50:50 joint-venture company will be set up to operate Expedia-branded business in Japan, India, South-East Asia and other East Asian markets, as well as AirAsia's AirAsiaGo and GoRooms businesses.

AirAsia (AirAsia Malaysia , AirAsia Indonesia , AirAsia Thailand , AirAsiaX and other AirAsia joint-venture airlines) and Expedia are also partnering outside of the new venture.

The tie-up will make Expedia the exclusive third-party travel provider for AirAsia inventory, allowing travellers to book the inventory on any of Expedia's travel sites globally.

Fernandes said by partnering with Expedia, AirAsia would be able to promote its services to consumers in North America .

On whether the nuclear scare in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami on March 11 would have any adverse impact on airlines, Fernandes said it was unlikely.

"Look at Europe during the heights of volcano eruptions and 9/11, people still want to travel and once the situation improves, more and more people will want to go on holidays,'' he said.

Expedia-AirAsia union gives birth to Asian web booking business

Expedia-AirAsia union gives birth to Asian web booking business

Gracia ChiangSingapore

THE REGION'S booming online travel market has pushed Expedia, Inc. and AirAsia to join forces and establish a 50:50 joint venture company, said to be the first of its kind between a low-cost carrier and an online travel agent.

Under the agreement announced today, a new company will be formed to operate Expedia-branded businesses in Japan, India, South-east Asia and other East Asian markets, as well as AirAsia's packaging and hotel booking websites, AirAsiaGo and GoRooms.

The joint venture will have the exclusive online third-party distribution rights in the region for AirAsia and AirAsiaX flights and travel packages. In addition, Expedia will also be the exclusive third-party travel provider for AirAsia inventory on its sites worldwide.

At the helm of the Singapore-based company is vice president and managing director of Expedia Asia Pacific, Dan Lynn, who will be relocating from Sydney.

Said the new CEO: "Expedia brings global strength in our supplier relationships, a very strong technology background and an understanding of online marketing. AirAsia complements that with its unique understanding of the Asian markets, its very compelling and unique inventory that is low-price but high-quality and its very deep understanding of social media."

AirAsia Group CEO, Tony Fernandes, said: "We think we have a 'Rolls-Royce partner' here. (Expedia is) going to take our content around the world, which will help AirAsia and AirAsiaX promote our flights in markets that we haven't reached before. Plus, we'll be able to get new ancillary income."

When asked if the partnership would cannibalise sales on AirAsia's own website, he said: "Who cares? AirAsia.com is a site that's always trying to cope. Everytime we have a sale, our system falls over even though we double, triple, quadruple the capacity. We can't cope with the demand. That's why I said there's no problem sharing some of that."

Fernandes explained that the Expedia and AirAsia sites would be branded differently and target separate market segments. For example, Expedia may be more dominant in certain countries like Japan, where it is already established, while AirAsiaGo would be bigger in China.

Calling this new venture Expedia's "Asia organisation", president of Expedia Worldwide, Scott Durchslag, said: "This is going to offer a much more efficient and effective alternative for consumers to travel, so I think it will have a significant impact on traditional, offline travel agents. This is a big leap forward in terms of what's possible."

Expedia, which rolled out its Singapore website last month, launched its Malaysia and Thailand products today. It will continue to run a full-service business, offering other airline content.

And the Deputy minister is U Htay Aung (which I think it's FINE). And where is U Aye Myint Kyu??? Gosh, he becomes a deputy minister for Sports.

New Minister Arrival to World of Our Own

MRTV-4 has just announced "U Tint San" will be the minister for both tourism and sports. As far as I know, he's from ACE construction; one of FIVE members of the Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association (MCEA) who contested the November 7 election as Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) candidates. He contested Ayeyarwady Region Amyotha Hluttaw constituency 1, which includes Pathein and Ngapudaw townships.

I still do not know the fact how it would be helpful to have him standing. Will keep you posted! Cheers!!!

Can't complain! Thomas, you are right, and thanks for that good archive article too. ha ha. Some heads from former government (I said former) wanted to play a trick like that. Look, what these guys are talking about is just not RIGHT. When people forget about it, news come up. They can't make us UGLY in the age of information. ha ha.. I'm quite amused about it.

Roman History in Croatia (Pula, Croatia)

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 10:27 PM PDT

It isn't difficult to imagine toga-clad men walking the streets and gathering in the main forum in a city whose layout appears unchanged for two millennia. Several Roman gates all...
